In fact, on November, 1995 at Sotheby's Auction House in Geneva, a 7.37 carat Fancy Intense Purplish Pink Diamond sold for $819,201 a carat. The highest price ever paid per carat for a coloured diamond was $1.3 million per carat. It was a 3.37 carat Fancy Vivid Blue sold at Christie's Auction House on May 16, 2008 for $4.95 million.
